Tanita BC-1000 Ant+ Wireless Body Composition Monitor

Tanita BC-1000 Ant+ Wireless Body Composition Monitor

Product Description

Tanita brings the most sophisticated health monitoring technology to health and fitness enthusiasts everywhere. The BC-1000 Body Composition Monitor offers consumers the ability to wirelessly link data to remote displays, such as a personal computer. Tanita has partnered with Garmin Ltd., the global leader in satellite navigation, to bring consumers the ability to securely and wirelessly transmit data to Garmin's FR60, FR60LTD and Forerunner 310XT Fitness Watches.

In addition to weight, body fat percentage, and hydration levels, the BC-1000 Body Composition Monitor provides measurements on muscle mass, overall physique rating, daily caloric intake, metabolic age rating, bone mass, and visceral fat. The BC-1000 will communicate with your computer and Tanita's new HealthyEdgeTM Software to wirelessly transmit these nine readings within seconds after stepping on the platform.

When using the Garmin FR60 or Forerunner 310XT Fitness Watches and their wireless technology, the readings of weight, body fat and body water are wirelessly displayed on the watch, while all nine readings are stored in the watch. When in range of a consumer's computer, the information is automatically transmitted to the computer using the wireless USB Stick and captured with Tanita's HealthyEdge Software.

The wireless interface protocol enables ultra low power applications ideal for fitness and health monitors and offers all the benefits of digital wireless communications with much lower power consumption than other wireless protocols.

The BC-1000 scale platform features no visible display, as readings are automatically transmitted to remote displays such as the Garmin FR60 fitness watch, a personal computer, or Tanita's remote display for easy viewing in various locations. This dynamic feature-the first of its kind-will allow for private readings and is perfect for anyone who wants to keep their health and fitness levels private, making the BC-1000 the ultimate choice for discretion.

3.0 out of 5 stars Useful but disappointing, July 3, 2011
This review is from: Tanita BC-1000 Ant+ Wireless Body Composition Monitor (Sports)
The -only- reason I am keeping this scale is that it allows me to store my weight on my Garmin FR60 watch and upload all my weight data to Garmin Connect automatically; this is a nice addition to my training gear. As a scale, it is mediocre at best. There are much cheaper scales that do a much more thorough job (Omron's for example). This scale measures weight, body fat, and hydration. When you upload to Garmin Connect, bone and muscle weight figures also pop up. However, upon close inspection, you realize that that part is just a bad gimmick (not Tanita's fault, I know), as it tabulates bone mass based on your total weight and then calculates muscle mass as weight minus fat minus bone. I didn't realize my liver and lungs were made of muscle tissue!

That you need to spend another $100 to get a display if you do not own a Garmin watch and do not want to lug your computer around every time is truly outrageous. Compared to Tanita's minimalistic LED, even Apple's philosophy... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a finished product. Mac software is an afterthought. Not compatible with Garmin 405, March 25, 2011

This scale is heavily promoted by both Garmin and Tanita as being an essential compliment to your training accessory kit. However, it doesn't live up to its promise without significant amounts of setup and debugging on your part.

Given that it costs as much as 10 times as a decent scale, it was a disappointing and unexpectedly time-consuming experience to set up.

It has no display on it - so you have to either buy a display as it is not included in the box, or use a PC.

It does not work with Garmin 405 devices.

The software it ships with on the included CDs (who still uses CDs to distribute software?) does not work with Macs.

If you spend some time searching around online, you will discover you can download a Mac OSX widget from Tanita.com to weigh yourself. However the download process is ridiculously overcomplicated (behind a form that asks for a "purchase number" that you won't have).

Then to weigh yourself you... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Good product but still a little disappointed., May 15, 2012

Good scale that works really well with my Garmin Forerunner 610. The measurements are uploaded automatically to my Garmin Connect account, which is awesome.
I am however disappointed with what should be the most important feature for this scale.. measuring my weight consistently. I can step on the scale 4-5 times in a row and the measured weight is consistently inconsistent. If it was only with a few grams I wouldn't care, but the difference is quite often greater than 1 kg. Should expect more from a scale that cost more than $200.
